Police say Ardanlee device was ‘viable and intended to kill’ and believe ‘dissident republicans’ are responsible
Police have said that the security alert at Ardanlee in Derry was a ‘viable device intended to kill’ and believe ‘dissident republicans’ are responsible.
Superintendent Gordon McCalmont said it was ‘placed outside the home of his colleague and that police believe it was put there by dissident republicans’.
He said it ‘was a family area’ and it was lucky they were not giving a press conference to say ‘someone had been killed’.
“The device exploded while army bomb technical officers were dealing with it.”
He said it was ‘not known what exact type of device it was’ but that ‘it was more than a pipe bomb’.
Superintended McCallmont said the officer targeted was being ‘comforted by his colleagues’ and would not say if there were children living at the home. He did say ‘there were many children in the area’.
