Consistency needed on flags issue – O’hOisin
Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Ó hOisín has called from more consistency across the various PSNI Divisions in handling contentious flags and marching related issues.
Assemblyman Ó hOisín was speaking after The Twelfth in Limavady where a number of bonfires were erected around Limavady, several of which had his election posters hoisted at the top.
“The area I represent straddles three different PSNI Command areas and I got different reactions to similar issues raised in each area relating to flags and bonfires.
“While I was happy with the professional way my complaint was dealt with in one area the other areas did not deliver that same level of service.
“It is important that we have a consistent approach to these problems from each area so that we can address any problems that arise in a uniform manner.
“I will be raising these concerns with my colleagues on the Policing Board so that we can raise the matter at the highest levels and ensure one policy is in position right across the command areas.”
A PSNI spokesperson said: “As is always the case, police have worked on this particular issue in consultation with partner agencies and the local community. This agreed partnership approach is set out in the ‘Joint Protocol in Relation to the Display of Flags in Public Areas’, along with the Department of the Environment, Department for Regional Development, Department for Social Development, Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister, and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive. We are firmly committed through our work with these and other partner agencies, as well as local communities, to address the issues surrounding the flying of flags in public areas.
“We are aware that the issue of flags remains a very difficult and emotive one and would continue to urge everyone to keep working to ensure that people can live without fear or intimidation, which is a basic fundamental human right.”
