Girl injured as crowds throw bottles in Belfast

A young girl has been injured during sporadic trouble in Belfast city centre on St Patrick’s Day.

Police said the 12-year-old was struck by a bottle thrown by a crowd at Castle Junction on Tuesday afternoon.

She has been taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital.

A man in his 30s has been arrested at Donegall Square North for disorderly behaviour.

Police said Donegall Place is currently closed to traffic due to the “large number” of people gathered and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Chief Inspector Robert Murdie continued: “Police in Belfast city centre are currently monitoring crowds which have gathered in the area.

“Isolated incidents of missiles being thrown have been reported.

“A young girl has been taken to hospital after being struck by a missile thrown from a crowd which had gathered at Castle Junction.

“A man in his 30s has been arrested for disorderly behaviour at Donegall Square North and will be reported to the Public Prosecution Service.

“Donegall Place is closed to traffic due to the large number of people gathered and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

“Officers will maintain a presence whilst crowds remain in the area.”
