ah3>Five boys, one aged 14 and four aged 16, have been arrested after police were attacked during “minor disorder” overnight in Londonderry.
Four of the teenagers were detained in the Westland Street area of the city on Tuesday on suspicion of riotous behaviour.

It comes after petrol bombs and other missiles were thrown at officers responding to reports of young people setting pallets and rubbish on fire.

The four boys were later released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Another 16-year-old, who was arrested in Collon Lane area on suspicion of disorderly behaviour, was released pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service.

Police said a “crate of petrol bombs” and other items were seized.

It followed trouble in the city involving youths on Monday, during which 35 petrol bombs were thrown at police and a van belonging to a local pizza delivery company was hijacked and burned out.

Chief Inspector Andy Lemon said: “The prompt actions of our officers prevented a reoccurrence of the disorder we saw the previous night.

“It is concerning to see teenagers, some as young as 14, getting caught up in this violence and I appeal to parents to make it their business to know where their children are and what they are doing.

“Young people need to listen to our message – you run the very real risk of being arrested and getting a criminal record which could affect your life for a very long time.

“I appeal to anyone with any information about those involved in the disorder last night to contact police at Strand Road on the non-emergency number 101.”
