Homes evacuated after car explosion

A number of homes were evacuated in Londonderry in the early hours of Tuesday morning following an explosion in a car.

Creggan, DerryPolice said Army bomb experts were called to examine the vehicle in the Circular Road area.

The explosion happened at about 0300 BST. Investigations are continuing and the area remains cordoned off.

SDLP councillor Jim Clifford condemned the attacked and said it could have “killed or seriously injured someone”.

“Those responsible have not only put the lives of local residents in danger but have caused widespread disruption to a great many people who have been trying to get to their work,” he said.

“We don’t need this and we don’t want this. The people of Creggan certainly don’t want this.”

Detectives investigating the incident have appealed for anyone with information to contact them on 0845 6008000.
