Adams to be extradited to NI
The brother of Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams is to be extradited to Northern Ireland to stand trial on allegations that he sexually abused his daughter.
Liam Adams, 56, is wanted by the PSNI over 18 charges of alleged abuse of his daughter Aine Tyrell, who waived her right to anonymity in a UTV Insight documentary in December 2009.
He lost his fight against extradition from the Irish Republic at the High Court in Dublin on Monday.
Ms Tyrell, 38, said the ruling has left her feeling more positive.
“I’m feeling a wee bit more positive about the way it has went so far, but it’s only a baby step,” she told UTV, as she emerged from the courtrooms flanked by relatives.
“I’d like to thank my family and friends for supporting me and I’ll be there until the end, and I’m ready to take whatever comes.”
The judge put a three-day stay on the deadline for an appeal to be lodged. Mr Adams was granted bail until the 15-day appeal window opens on Thursday.
The charges against him include rape, indecent assault and gross indecency.
The offences are alleged to have occurred at various addresses in Belfast between March 1977 and 1983, when his daughter was aged between four and 10.
The judge rejected arguments the accused could not get a fair trial because of pre-trial publicity and comments by his brother, a delay in bringing charges and changes in the jury selection in Northern Ireland.
“He must look to the courts of the requesting State to protect his rights,” said Mr Justice Edwards.
“Those courts would be better placed to deal with those issues.”
Ms Tyrell first lodged the complaints to police in Belfast in 1987, accompanied by her mother Sarah Adams.
Her father failed to appear in court on charges connected with the alleged abuse in November 2008.
Adams, who denies all charges against him, handed himself in to Irish police in Co Sligo in the Republic last year after a European Arrest Warrant was issued by the PSNI.
