Twelfth rioting: two men arrested

Two men have been arrested in connection with rioting in north Belfast on 12 July.

Riot @ Ardoyne | 12 07 2011The men, aged 37 and 23, are being questioned by detectives investigating the trouble in Belfast, before and after, the Orange Order celebrations.

The 37-year-old is being questioned about the trouble in Ardoyne, where nationalists attacked police following the contentious north Belfast parade.

There was also serious disorder in north Belfast the night before.

Twenty-two police officers were injured during several hours of violence in the Broadway area on 11 July.

During three nights of trouble across the city, shots were fired at police and rioters also threw petrol bombs.

The PSNI responded with water cannon and fired over 100 baton rounds.

After the rioting, Assistant Chief Constable Duncan McCausland promised there would be “significant arrests” of those involved.

The PSNI has so far made a total of 33 arrests across Northern Ireland in relation to trouble around the 12 July holidays.
