A 22 year-old man has been charged with 32 separate offences including possessing a firearm in relation to a string of incidents in the Galliagh area on Tuesday night.

Christopher O’Reilly, of Glenabbey Drive, appeared at Derry Magistrates Court this morning after being arrested with two other people, who remain in police custody.

O’Reilly is charged with 32 separate offences including aggravated vehicle taking, possession of a firearm, namely a handgun in suspicious circumstances, possession of a machete, aggravated burglary and attempted hijacking.

The court was told that all of the offences are alleged to have occurred on Tuesday, November 18.

Opposing bail, a police officer said that O’Reilly had 30 previous convictions since 2010, including offences of violence.

The police officer described Tuesday night’s alleged offences as ‘sustained and unprovoked attack on the community’.

The officer also told the court that there could be ‘retaliation’ against the defendant and the ‘safest place’ for him was in custody.

O’Reilly was remanded in custody to appear in court again via videolink on December 11.
