April 20 (Bloomberg) — The man charged with killing two British soldiers in Northern Ireland last month will be a candidate in June’s European Parliament elections.
Colin Duffy, 41, will run as an independent candidate in the June 4-7 voting, according to the Republican Network for Unity, an umbrella group for republicans opposed to Northern Ireland’s peace process. The RNU is coordinating Duffy’s election bid.
“Colin will stand at the poll, that is for certain,” Kevin McQuillan, a spokesman for the Republican Network for Unity, said in a telephone interview today. “A meeting this Thursday night will confirm the details of it.”
Duffy is charged with the March 7 murders of two British soldiers at an army base outside Belfast. The Real Irish Republican Army claimed responsibility for gunning down the two soldiers, the first fatalities for the military in the region since 1997
